The series is a ramble of a road story, movie, odyssey, using the Civil War era to push into modern times, to explore America and its racial divisions, to suss out that deep and relentless legacy on the American psyche, to offer a path forward. A big question haunts the series. Three eras connect our American experience: the antebellum, the postbellum and beyond. How do we move into the beyond?
The first book in the collection, TRUMP-A-LINCOLN-A-LAGO (TALL), was published in 2021. TALL focuses on a dinner I had with President Trump and the first family in the summer of 2019. Simultaneously, the narrative pursues a pivotal question of history never adequately answered. Why did President Lincoln travel to battlefields during the Civil War? Records indicate that he went to Antietam, Gettysburg, Petersburg and Richmond, in order, while those killing fields still smoldered. What was he seeking?
